Welcome to Cornerstone Eldercare Support! I’m so excited to be traveling on this journey with you. My hope is that we will make connections and lift each other up along the way. I too am a family caregiver.
My 83 year-old mother lives in an assisted living facility five miles from my house. In addition to all that comes with the caregiver role, I truly enjoy playing Rummikub (she’s a pro!), going to the facility church service, or just reminiscing about the past with her. As a professional, I was a nursing home administrator for eleven years and spent two years as the director of an Alzheimer’s facility. Personally, I have been married to my devoted husband for 37 years and have two adult children who have given us three beautiful grandkids with two on the way!
So how did I get here? In 2007 God was clearly calling me to use my spiritual gifts of teaching and writing to start my own education business for nurses and social workers. I answered that call and managed H.I.S. Cornerstone (www.hiscornerstone.com) for 17 years. In February 2024, also with spiritual direction, I sold the business to my niece who is thriving! It makes my heart happy to have kept the business in the family, and it is still following the mission of educating healthcare professionals about caring for the elderly.
These last two years have taught me a lot about waiting for God and working on myself. We call that pruning right? "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit." John 15:2
Last year when I was walking in my neighborhood listening to my favorite Christian music, my phone suddenly died. I prayed in the silence, "God, as I head back home, please show me what you would have me do next." I kid you not - when I looked up, there was an elderly gentleman walking on the golf course by the sidewalk. I stopped, and for thirty minutes I found myself in a heartfelt conversation about his faith, family, and career. As we said our goodbyes, I heard God's still small voice, "Take care of My beloved generation." This was the theme for my book I published in 2023 - Transforming the Mundane into Sacred: Spirituality in Caregiving for the Elderly. And there was my answer! What better way to take care of His beloved generation than to take care of those He has called to care for them?
Since then I have been blessed to facilitate several caregiver support groups and have been able to do what I love, presenting and teaching caregivers at conferences and family nights. As I launch this website and Cornerstone Eldercare Support, I pray that God will use me to help those caring for our elders - practically, emotionally, and spiritually.
In Him,
Robyn
